The pulse of the design industry is poised to get pumped this month, with the next generation of product debuts.
That includes the bath industry, where innovation and design are heightening, fueled by increasing demand from tech-savvy, style-conscious consumers – and at all budgets.
For example, the product line at European Bath | Kitchen | Tile & Stone, a wholesale provider of plumbing products, tile + stone, accessories and hardware, ranges from entry level for starter homes to high end for multi-million dollar properties, said Camille Herd, showroom manager.
Still, designers represent the highest client base for the business, she said. “Designers represent our number one customer segment. And since we moved to the Las Vegas Design Center [in 2019], our designer business has doubled. We like working with them – they control their orders, they help their own clients select the right components, they are responsible for their purchases.”
A big part of designer business in bath faucets involves customization for their clients. And in Moen’s case, that service “goes beyond custom finishes,” noted Erika Tromm, product manager, bath.
“Moen offers a wide range of style and platform choices when it comes to bathroom faucets, including options with technological innovations to help customize a space,” Tromm said.
In that same vein, Kohler’s “Designed to be Designed” customization program options continue to expand. It recently launched the Occasion bath faucet collection, for example, and expanded the new two-toned finish, Brush Moderns Brass with Matte Black, for the portfolio,” said Crystal Riste, bathroom faucets product manager.
“This collection offers consumers and designers the opportunity to pair their spout and handle to get a customized look,” she said.
For a glimpse into projected bathroom design trends for the year ahead, the National Kitchen + Bath Association’s (NKBA) recently released 2023 Design Trends Report. In the next three years, respondents predicted that black and nickel/pewter will be the most popular faucet colors (at 48% and 47%, respectively), followed by chrome and stainless steel looks (both at 31%).
For European Bath | Kitchen | Tile & Stone, “chrome is the most affordable and it’s practical, but gold is the favorite color right now,” said Herd.
On the topic of sustainability and water-saving technologies, the bath faucet category is broadening its conversation to include new developments this year and beyond, said the NKBA Designer Trends report.
Some related innovations in the pipeline include: Easy to clean undermount / integrated sink configurations; bathroom sinks that drain into toilets for flushing; and Environmental Protection Agency “WaterSense”-certified faucets/shower heads/toilets.
The latter comprises products that meet water efficiency and performance criteria outlined by the EPA to help reduce water use in the home—“while still providing a great experience with water,” said Tromm.
Mission Moen’s sustainability commitment aims to save 1 trillion gallons of water and repurpose 2,000 tons of ocean plastic by 2030 through its products. “An array of Moen innovations help support this goal, including our wide range of WaterSense-certified bathroom faucets,” she added.
At Kohler, a similar initiative – Believing in Better – touches many areas of the company – not only with water savings but in additional facets like greenhouse gas emissions and waste management. Many of Kohler’s bath faucets offer reduced flow rate options (1.2 gallons per minute, 1.0gpm, 0.5gpm).
The latest developments in the bath category will be showcased at NKBA’s Kitchen + Bath Industry Show (KBIS), Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. Besides Kohler and Moen, other leading bath faucet brands on KBIS’s roster for this edition of the show include Acquabella, Rainstick, ACO ShowerDrain, Brondell Inc. and Brizo.
In addition, two new faucet exhibitors will join the show this edition. Principle Faucets will showcase its fully integrated faucet and foot pedal systems, while Paini US, a division of an Italian family-owned manufacturer, will highlight its high-quality bathroom and kitchen faucets as well as shower systems and accessories.
